A pattern that's "bigger on the inside!"

This pattern pays tribute to the iconic imagery found within the BBC's sci-fi, cult classic television show Doctor Who. Featuring the good ship TARDIS, short for Time And Relative Dimension In Space, the unforgettable time machine-disguised as a police box- is used by the Doctor to travel in, helping him win countless battles across the universe. Doctor Who's timeless escapades and fantastical characters have shaped much of my adolescence and still continue to inspire my curiosity and sense of adventure and creativity.

When designing this pattern, I used my Wacom bamboo tablet and stylus, three-button mouse, as well as the digital tools and workspace provided by Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to incorporate a simple organic art style using a variety of stroke weights, in conjunction with the flat, monochromatic blue fill overlaying a white background. This contrast aided in emphasizing the expressive line art and depth within the focal object, the TARDIS. Finally, I added a "Palette Knife" texture effect on the TARDIS to increase visual interest, dimension and contrast with the background. Once I completed the initial design of the pattern, I used the techniques learned in class to convert it into a pattern and then saved it within my swatches library. In the image below is the original 8x8 inch design (far left), as well as an example of the pattern when used to fill a 44 x 39 inch object (far right). All in all, I think this is a good start to build upon for my final design, and I would like to experiment with juxtaposing various orientations of this swatch to generate even more visual interest within the piece
