For this assignment we were tasked with designing a collaged landscape, using tools and techniques learned so far in Photoshop. For my collage, I tried to experiment with mixing textures, overlays, and other visual elements to generate an appealing and detailed scene. I initially wanted to have my collage depict some kind of underwater scene, inspired by previous student's work. While working I realized I wanted to change my initial idea of a simple underwater landscape, and instead move above the surface to build a sanctuary. I was guided by my current mental state of intense stress from school and sport obligations, and decided to search for images of calm scenery. I ultimately chose the Japanese Pagoda to become the new focal point of my work. For the background, I used a photograph of the St. Mary's River, effectively establishing a vibrant, yet serene color scheme. In order to incorporate more detail to increase visual interest in my water elements, I used inspiration from the "The Great Wave" tapestry I have hanging in my dorm. Using the pen tool, I freehanded wave-like assets and used clipping mask layers to texturize them. I used clipping masks to also texturize some of the rock formations and the body of water surrounding the Pagoda. To create the tree-like structures on the rock faces and framing the entrance to the Pagoda, I drew from my original downloaded imagery and repurposed a long branch of coral using the transform controls and layer type effects. The lantern-like objects resting in the water were installed in order to create an added layer of depth, following leading lines that guide you towards the center of the image.
My plans moving forward include finding more elements to increase visual interest within the sky as well as matching lighting and tonal values within my work between various assets. Also, i plan to include some kind of river monster, or vessel that is sailing towards the Pagoda. I think these adjustments will make the work as a whole more thematically cohesive and aesthetically appealing. I also would like to continue using the contrasting effect between cartoon and realistic elements within my work, as I believe this juxtaposition of assets generates a more fantastical atmosphere and enables viewers to creatively interpret what is real and what is not within the context of the scene being created.
