"Cut and Paste Culture" Responses

Contemporary collage differs from approaches to collage in the 20th and 21st century. Many of the contemporary artists featured within the article combine tactile objects and video and/or audio recordings to compose their works. The unique incorporation of video and audio clips are used to convey various attitudes towards events in the media, news, and other social avenues of life. Such a variety of physical mediums and multi-sensory experiences defines contemporary collage as a way to "experience information simultaneously" through the sensory overload presented to the audience. For example, video artist Ryan Trecartin is a proponent of this technique, using it within his work to confront image culture by "manifesting the internet itself."

Collage is a strategy for making appeals to so many artists today. Collage provides a way for artists to convey underlying meanings of various societal issues, or causes, using a wide range of mediums, distinctly representing their own artistic voice and vision based on their composition. As stated in the article, collage is able to transcend time, by bringing together found objects and joining them with multi-sensory experiences. It is a very freeing process that has unlimited interpretation and potential.
