An artist that inspires me would be Vincent van Gogh. Known today as one of the greatest Post-Impressionist artists, his pieces are uniquely imbued with rhythm and movement. Within my favorite work of his, Starry Night, van Gogh's brush strokes expressively flow through the sky, as he highlights the wind trails and dream-like haze emanating from the stars and moon, softly illuminating the town below. Most interestingly, this piece was one of the very few in which van Gogh deviated from real life and instead used his own imagination to create the landscape shown in the painting. I aspire to give my work such expressive qualities and hope to someday learn how to stylize my art in such a way that it becomes as unique and distinct as van Gogh's. In addition to his unique style, van Gogh's personal story of his rise to prominence within the art world is also quite inspiring. Working as a youth for an art dealer, van Gogh realized his initial artistic interests. Due to romantic rejection and spiritual crises later in life, van Gogh became increasingly reclusive. Living as an outcast, van Gogh began his own artistic pursuits, intending to provide comfort and consolation for his fellow man through his breadth of work. In life, his work was shamed, and his mental and physical health continued to deteriorate to the point of suicide. Fortunately, his work, constituting of over 800 oil paintings and 700 drawings, eventually gained notable popularity during the late 20th century and continues to garner the respect and admiration of artists and collectors around the world today.
