For this first assignment, we were tasked with finding an example of visual culture that was created using visual effects and/or motion design. Visual effects and motion design are key components to the overall development of a work's form, content and process. Featured below are the two well known logos used to represent the National Aeronautics And Space Administration, or NASA. During both my sophomore and junior summers and throughout my senior year of high school, I held a paid internship working for the Engineering and Technology Directorate (ETD) Graphics Lab at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. As such, I am especially interested in these two pieces, as they represent the U.S.A's tremendous feats in furthering humanity's scientific understanding and space exploration. Regarding specific design choices, I especially appreciate the current logo's contrast of red, white and blue motifs, as well as the inclusion of stars and other cosmic references. The NASA logo brings with it immense prestige and intellect which I attribute to its clean and professional graphic design. I believe this logo was created through the use of Adobe Illustrator, or a similar software, in order to create the simplistic yet purposeful geometric forms representing the main goals and interests of the organization. I would speculate that within the realm of Adobe Illustrator, graphic artists would have employed the use of several drawing tools including the pen and anchor tool, various shape tools, type tools, as well as multiple art-boards in order to achieve a layered effect within the relatively flat design of the famous NASA "meatball."
